Red phase T. radix ????

Blecha Sep 29, 2007 01:19 PM

I have a normal phase T. radix that is a long term WC from Omaha, Nebraska. I recently found a red garter snake also in Omaha that I am not sure if it is T. radix or T. s. parietalis. I'll post a picture and hopefully someone can let me know what it is. Also, what happens if i breed a normal T. radix with my mystery red garter?

Here are the URL links to a couple more pictures in case the one on here isn't good...

your snake looks like redsided sirtalis parietalis in radix the lateral line is on scale rows 3 and 4

that is a red sided garter, t sirtalis parietalis. you would end up with hybirds, not real popular with a lot of people.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Now I know they are different subspecies so I will definitely keep them seperated and have to try to find a male T. radix and a female T. s. parietalis. I'd like to start working with albinos... do they have albinos for both types that I have?

Yes, there are albinos of both. But since your chances of coming across a wild albino of either are slim to none, your best bet would be to contact Scott Felzer. He's one of the sponsors of this forum. The link to his website is towards the top of this forum right above the messages.

Ha ha, that would be pretty sweet to just find an albino. I've been thinking about getting some snakes from Scott for years, my recent renewed interest in garters might just force me to do it this time... Thanks for your help in telling the snakes apart guys, I made the mistake of thinking it was T. radix just because the picture of a red T. radix in my field guide looked closer at first glance than the T. s. parietalis... That and the fact that I caught it literally right next to a couple T. radix. I should have read the part about the side stripe being confined to the 3rd and 4th rows for radix and 2nd and 3rd for sirtalis. Good news is now I know how to tell them apart and I've got an excuse to start 2 breeding projects instead of just 1 Are there natural hybrids between these two snakes? I don't want hybrids, I am just curious...

i meant lateral stripe been around fish too much your close up of the stripes in photos were much cudos though peace

Scott Felzer has both albinos...the albino reds are sold out already, they go fast. He has several types of albino radix, Nebraska strain, Iowa strain, and red and orange (christmas) Iowa albinos. He might still have some of them available
