woma information/advice

varanidguy Sep 29, 2007 05:18 PM

ok guys, i guess the title says it all. i'm having a hard time finding indepth information on woma care and breeding. i'm looking into buying an '07 pair as an investment. but i can't seem to really find detailed information (if any at all) about woma breeding. so i'm turning to the community directly, any and all information about woma husbandry and breeding information that anybody is willing to share would be much appreciated!

also, how big do womas get? what is the required space to keep adults? and i've read at times that they can be housed together, others say they shouldn't be...what's your take on that?

anyways, thanks in advance for any information that you can give me!

Womas aren't hard to breed, it's pretty much standard python breeding. An adult female would do best in a four foot cage, males don't get as big and can get by in a little smaller cage. I wouldn't house them together, it can mess up your breeding schedule, and makes feeding awful tough. Hopes this helps.

I keep the hot spot at 88, cool side about 78. They can take a lot of cooloing, I usually take them down to the upper 60s, but some people are having good success with very little cooling.

Womas are really simple to keep, easy to breed, and make great captives. Incubating the eggs can be tough. My biggest female is just over 6 feet and pretty stout, male is just under 6feet and much slimmer in build. Echoing Barry's comments on temps, though I dont cool mine as low as some do, they reproduce just fine for me with my temp regime.

Heres a girl from this year that I am keeping, her siblings all sold within a few weeks. I put my animals together every other year with a "rest season" in btween.

They are great snakes that are finally within financial reach of most anyone interested in working with them.

Shane,

They are kind of like a big kingsnake. There was a great article in Reptiles magazine from a few years back that has all the answers you seek. I will check which month/year when I get home. The only problem I have with mine is they are so ugly, I have a hard time selling them. I still have a bunch and some are over 2'.... Here is a fugly sucker from this year and her future boyfriend....
