I never turn the lights off completely. I just adjust the temps. down slightly and shorten the daytime after the dragons have started brumating. My substrate is sand and most of my adults dig in under 1/2 logs on the cool end of their enclosures.
Another strategy is to just put them in boxes in a cool dark place but I never do that. I know breeders that do though.
That sounds exactly like my set-up. I've never been comfortable with putting them in a box and tucking them away. Since I have such a large collection of various herps, they are beginning to tax my electric bill. One of my BDs is starting to dig in and I'm thinking, "Hey, do you really need that light on?"
Just kidding, really, but it does remind me of my husband following the kids around when they were little and turning off the lights behind them!
