Baby Feeding Tricks?

atherisquamigera Sep 30, 2007 10:57 AM

ok, one of my new babies has not eaten for me yet.
first attempt: thawed a pinky and danced it around to provoke a feeding reponse. failed. (worked on all the others)
second attempt: same thing at 3 am. failed.
third attempt: left warm super smelly pinky in cage without disturbing the snake at all. failed. (at night)
what next? tonight I am going to either brain one or try some bigger mice, should I just leave it in there or dance it around? she seems scared of the moving mice. I know she eats cuz hummel wouldn't sell a snake that doesn't eat. I haven't brained them yet, cuz their smell is potent enough that I didn't think it would make a difference.

You could try warming the mouse up and leaving them both in a brown lunch bag over night. Or just wait a week and let it get really hungry before trying to feed again.

Odd that it's still not eating after a couple weeks. They usually get hungry after missing one meal. I hope the bag trick works for you.

LIVE like a hopper or small adult. If you choose to wait and try the f/t then wait 2-3 weeks before feeding so as to make him or her hungry instead of trying in a week. The little snake can go for a couple of months before you should get worried.

Jasmine -
Double check your temps and humidity first.. a dry snake will often not eat and little brb's can dehydrate very very quickly.

Then, I would get away from the pinkies.. use a hopper mouse (one that is close to being weined. You can try it warmed up.. just dip it in hot tap water for a few seconds. If that doesn't work, warm a hopper up and split the head open w/ a razor. Leave the mouse in front of the snakes hide all night - turn off all the lights and don't disturb it until the next day. If that doesn't work, I would leave it alone for 4 or 5 days.. don't even open the cage unless you need to spot clean, and then try w/ a live hopper.. most any brb will be eating by then.

I have seen a lot of little brb's that are shy eaters and will only eat if you leave the prey in the tub over night.

If the above doesn't work, you can try either the paper bag / brained prey.. or what I like to do is use a small deli cup w/ holes punched in it.. works just as well for me.

humidity is great, 75 when I open it up and 80-90 most of the rest of the time. temp is good, I just set the thermostat to high 70's and it goes between 75 and 80. gonna try a larger mouse tonight. been leaving them in over night, poor thing is so tiny. Tonight I will have to set the alarm, she seemed to at least show intrest at 3am, so maybe a brained hopper introduced at 3am and left all night will do the trick. if not then its paper bag time.

p.s. it's good to see you back tim.

Does BH feed f/t or live. It took me three months to get one of my babies to switch to f/t. I always tried f/t and then fed live 2 days later when she did not eat f/t. I would also agree with Tim to switch to hoppers vs. pinkies - unless it is a pinkie rat. Also, depending what BH feeds is that it may be picky and wants rats or mice and not the other.
