phiber_optikx Sep 30, 2007 01:17 PM

I will be in Galveston TX. in a few weeks for one day. Anywhere very close to there to do some decent field herping?

It depends on the weather. The Texas gulf coast is a great herping area, even in the late and early season.

In a few weeks, it should be beginning to cool down with daytime highs in the mid 70s and cooler nights. That can be great for flipping. If you can find trash to flip in the grasslands and marshes around the island, you should find a few things.

If it is warm (80°s), you can roadhunt, but good luck finding a road on the island worth hunting. Go off the island to the south towards Freeport or north to the Bolivar Peninsula and you might get away from the traffic. Even going across to the marshlands on the mainland off of I45 can get you to some really nice coastal marshland and prairie habitats.

Watch out for Western Diamondbacks. It doesn't look like good habitat, but they are out on those barrier islands.

Thanks. Someone said I should just make the short trip up to Brazos bend sp. Is that a better idea?

Brazos Bend is a long drive from Galveston.

I would recommend going over towards either Anuhuac National Wildife Refuge (east of Galveston) or west to Brazoria NWR. Either one will show you lots of herps and you can see any species you would find at Brazos Bend.

Anuhuac NWR is unusual in that it is open 24 hours a day. You can often find herps on the roads there at night (of course, collecting is prohibited). Turning any trash around the grasslands/marshes near either refuge can be good as well.

Brazos bend is actually about 10 miles closer then that one. Either one is appealing. The fact that it is open 24 hours is possibly a deciding factor. I will be driving for about 13 hours so the extra hour from galveston isn't a big deal. Thanks for the suggestion!
