Acceptable Accessories in Housing

i just got a python from craigslist. i have access to a wood shop and wanted to build it a new water dish and play/hiding structure.

are there particular woods i must avoid or any precautions i should take before putting something shop-produced into the cage? i was thinking about using beech for the water dish and i wanted to make it wide enough that he could crawl into safely. would it matter if i left it rough or sanded it smooth?

while i have your attention i have another question. so far he has remained coiled under his log, but he just ate yesterday when i first got him. is this normal for the digesting period or could he be stressed from his change of environment?

thanks!

my BP hides a lot after eating & esp during the day. As far as wood CEDAR is a BIG NO NO! Never heard of problems using beech wood. I have never seen a BP soak its body in water bowl, so a small dish should suffice.
