My first pit - cape gopher

zach_whitman Oct 01, 2007 01:49 AM

So I was at the local reptile shop and I came across this female. Despite having worked with all types of colubrids for many years I have never owned a pit. However after finding a wild bullsnake a few weeks ago (see post below) they have been on my mind. So when I saw this little awesome red thing with the stripe on her neck I had to have her. What do ya think?

Zach,

That is truly one of the best capes I have ever seen. Very good find!!

A word of caution: Capes are very sensitive, and, due to myself learning a hard lesson with my first pit which was also a cape, they do better at lower temps, like 78. Also, they do not tolerate bigger meals like some pines and bulls can. Once they regurge, it is almost 100% downhill from there. IMO, keep the meals perhaps on the smaller side vs. what you would feed a bull, and cooler temps, such as 78, and she will do great.

Again, awesome snake!!

Take care!

Billy

Thanks for the advice. I have been doing some research and from what little info I have found it seems like I am going to keep them exactly like my mountain kings. Anyone see anything wrong with this? Do they require a long cool hibernation to breed successfully? I just can't imagine it gets that cold so far south...but what do I know...

She housed two large pinks as soon as I got her home. No regurges yet.

The owner of the store bred her, I actualy got to see the father, so I know she is two months old. That said I am surprised at how large she is. What is the clutch size like on these guys?

Nice to see you take the pit plunge Zach! Nice looking cape you found. Pits are large hatchlings, my northern pines were 20 inches out of the egg. Good luck with your new obsession!
