Southern Hognose colors as they age?

FL_Herps Oct 01, 2007 05:40 PM

I am hoping some of you guys have an idea of how this works from experience...

Do southern hognose snakes typically gain more peach color on their back as they get older, or does it tend to be however they look as hatchlings is just about as nice as they will ever look?

For instance, what do you predict hatchling southerns like these will turn out like as adults?
(BTW these pics are not mine, they from A.C.)

do you breed them? id love to get my hands on some of the babies from that orange one, its the most amazing one ive ever seen. the other ones amazingly nice too. im from long island new york, so we got the pure black ones, sometimes with a few yellow dots. real plain and boring. but those are great looking. what locality are they?

Mike I think you are confusing species you are describing a color morph of Eastern hognose. These are Southerns.

FloridaHogs Oct 10, 2007 03:40 PM

I don't know about that Tom, I would call those orange morphs. The 3 adult southerns I had did not have any orange on them. They were just tan in color. I think the southerns have more color variation than people give them credit for.

Jenea I am confused about your post. My post to Mike was in reference to the fact that he lives in New York and to my knowledge there are no southerns in his range but there are easterns. Please give me more detail about what you are questioning.? tom

When he said he loved the orange one he was referring to the pics of the southerns. When he spoke about the black he was referring to the native easterns. More confusion on his part I think. At least that was how I took it...
