Housing Hatchlings Together

sunflowerdragons Oct 01, 2007 06:00 PM

I always wondered, if you were a breeder and had to house hatchlings together for whatever reason; how would you take care of them so that they wouldn't hurt (or worse, eat) each other?

Sorry, I posted this on the wrong board, (I keep doing that) you can reply to it here but I'm going to move it to housing and enclosures.

Generally speaking, hatchling corns won't harm one another. Neither will adults. The problem with housing multiple corns in one enclosure is that it causes stress.

Corn snakes are solitary by nature. Some corn snakes, including babies, can tolerate the stress of being housed with other corns. Some cannot and will go off-feed.

Other snakes may regurgitate. If you have a box of 20 corns, sometimes it's hard to figure out which one threw up.

Speaking of feeding, the babies would need to be fed seperately - if not, there's a chance that two babies would grab the same pinky and not let go - one snake would eventually swallow the other. This wouldn't be a case of a corn intentionally causing harm to another - it's just a feeding accident.

That is a nice snake Tim. Is it a caramel or an amber?

It's what I call an "earthtone." Simply a normal corn with "earthy" coloration. Here's its mom laying eggs:

Some hatchlings, even if they have been fed on pinkies, even if their cagemates don't smell like mice, even if there is no other reason behind it...some hatchlings will eat their cagemates.

Cornsnakes ae not NORMALLY cannibalistic, in that the vast majoity of them would rather eat mice than their siblings, but some of them ARE cannibals. Unfortunately, the only way to know for sue which is which is to see where one has eaten another.

What do *I* do when I have multiple hatchlings?

I try to separate out the problem feeders, because I have always found that they are the most likely to be cannibals.

I always feed them separately.

I make sure to rinse off all hatchlings immediately after feeding them before reinserting them in the enclosure.

If I EVER see one trying to eat another, I keep that sucker by itself forever.

And I sell them all as soon as possible so that they have limited opportunity to snack on one another.

Hope that all helps...
