Sick gecko speding nights in the water bowl

cheshireycat Aug 22, 2003 03:42 AM

Alrighty, yesterday I changed the water in my sick geckos bowl to Pedialyte. This is a gecko I bought on the 16th of this month, and has tremors when it walks and won't eat (and was very skinny, although much fuller now on the few days of liquid diet).

Anyway, last night and this night I've found her both nights spending hours at a time just standing in her water bowl that has Pedialyte in it. I'm not sure if she did this when there was just water in it and nothing else, I just know she's doing it now.

She sometimes moves around in it and takes a single sip every few seconds. Which I'm guessing is good for her, but that Pedialyte is cold! After a long, long while she'll leave the water bowl. Yesterday she left it and ended up back in it an hour later.

Tonight, after she left it (it's 4:45 am here) I picked her up and held her for a bit and noticed she had what I think were hiccups. Drunk from the Pedialyte, eh girl? Is this normal?

And what could it mean if she's just standing in her water bowl like that, occassionaly lapping? Although she's up for small parts of the day other than feedings, she doesn't do that except for at night. And sometimes she'll have the two legs of one side in the bowl, and sometimes she'll have all four, and sometimes she'll only take her tail out. She seems to like it.

Sorry to hear your gecko hasn’t been feeling well. I would guess that the hiccups mean that she has an upset stomach. She is most likely dehydrated, so that would explain why she is close to her dish. I’ve seen a few of my geckos laying in their water dish, but only when it is low. They must like it better than their humid hide.
You might try moving her humid hide closer to the dish, that side of the cage may be more comfortable for her.
Try offering freshly molted crix of mealworms to your gecko, they are very mild on the stomach. I know it’s a lot of work but it may make the difference in getting her to eat again. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Hey Thanks for the concern.

Well, here's the thing. She's been on a liquid diet and was drinking plenty earlier (and doesn't have diarrhea), so I don't want to assume she's dehydrated. And, since it's a quarantine tank (10-gallon) everything is small and close together. Her humid hide is right next to the water dish as is and I'm very confused!

She isn't even interested in food at this moment, but if I have some fresh-molted mealworms, I'll see if she's more interested in those. She sees the crickets as just co-inhabitants or something. She was looking into the feeding bowl a few times, but it wasn't for food, maybe just calcium.

Again, thanks for the concern and I'll definitely keep you posted

Nope, I haven't.

I'm going to see if I have them available to me and try them out, though

Well, she's still not doing very well, but at least she finally ate two mealies
