EMERGENCY!!!!!!

6lkl6l Oct 02, 2007 07:09 PM

i put a pies of driftwood in my cage and apparently it was loaded with mites. now my snake is loaded, im treating the mites now with reptile releif. but i didnt notice them for a couple weeks so he's had it pretty bad for about 2 1/2 weeks. last time it ate was 3 weeks ago, so its looking kind of thin. i think it either has a RI or mouth rot or both. was foaming bad last night, not doing it since i got it in the other cage with temps at 93. wont eat.
should i just see if it gets better by friday or take the 80mile trip to the closest exotic vet?
thanks

i normally don't respond to stupid things like this as they piss me off, why bother asking what to do, a vet is must seeing how it's been under mites for that long. That's why one always disenfects their items before placing a snake with it. Lovely, just lovely!!

Where did the driftwood come from ?
Your animal most likely had mites long before the diftwood introduction ?You just had a hatching and that why you just now see them.
Reptile mites need a reptile host, diftwood doesnt make a suitable host.
As for the RI and such,it may be best to truck it to the Vet.

TNK is right, the mites didn't come in on the driftwood. The animal needs to see a Vet for the stomatitis and or respiratory infection. It's a shame you didn't notice for 2 or 3 weeks, snakes need daily maintenance. Making sure the temps maintain, water evaporation, scum in the bowl, humidity and MITE inspection! Also, 3 weeks shouldn't "thin" a snake out. They are built go without food for 6 months without skipping a beat. In the mean time, if you google "stomatitis treatment for boas" you should find some "at home" remedies to prevent further infection before your trip to the Vet. Keep it hot, some people like low humidity but I keep mine at normal levels. You can also look into ordering Tylan to treat the stomatitis but I prefer Amikacin because it's more aggressive/successful.

Just to be safe, I'm not a Vet. I'm mearly describing what I would do in that situation. Take what you want from my previous post.

Good advice already posted. I will add just a little to it. Reptile Relief will kill lots of mites but it will not kill all of them. They will be back. Permethrin in Provent-a-mite and some other products kills them all plus their eggs. Mites are a curse and must be COMPLETELY eliminated to keep your snakes healthy.

I've used Provent-a-mite in the past when my boas got mites and it worked wonders and haven't been back since. (just make sure to follow the directions.)
Mites suck

Exactly why Nix and Equate Bedding Spray out performs all three listed 100%.
It takes out the eggs before they ever hatch.RR,PAM claim it,but cant support it.
