Well, rats do smell, but not nearly so much as mice. I keep mine in overly large cages so I may not be able to help you with more realistic dimensions but the link might help. I have mine in groups of 2-4 females in cages from 1X2ft to 24X18X18 and I move the male around...so there isn't a male in each enclosure. I also keep them in wire cages with lots of airflow and on cellsorb bedding instead of shavings. Rats have more delicate respiratory systems.

I use it for my rats only (well, okay, I use it for my Kenyan Sand Boas and for my Sugar Glider too.But they are so clean it is spot cleaned and lasts weeks)NOT for mice or other rodents. The pellets are loose recycled paper....like a less harsh Yesterday's News. Here it is $16/#40 and I tend to mix it with alfalfa (as in rabbit food pellets)pellets too. Though the alfalfa goes to bits faster. The cellsorb is great to avoid the chronic URIs. And I admit to pampering my rats. Beats fighting sniffles all the time. Our feed store gets it in for us....there is a group of rat raisers and herpers that use it.
