Redfoot Hatchling Problem

ftrs Oct 03, 2007 09:19 AM

I have about 20 hatchlings that are kept on moist cypress mulch.
The older ones(one to two months old) are showing indented and concave plastrons. I have never seen this before and have raised many. It's as if the plastron is sucking in or colapsing on one side of the center or the whole center.
Anyone out there know what may be causing this?

Their plastron are soft at that age and the dents come from them sitting on a piece of mulch or other irregularity. They will get that way when they pile up on each other too.
You will probably find that if you take what you consider to be the worst of these hatchlings and then place them on a flatter (and softer) surface and feed them well that the problem will disappear after a day or so.

Thank you. I noticed this problem late at night. The next day(yesterday) I got home from work and they were all fine(flat). I then realized what was happening.
Thanks again for the advice.
