black tail

kat_kies Oct 03, 2007 11:20 AM

Ok yesterday my husband called me and he had with him a small iguana his friend gave him with cage and everything because the friends child was exceptionally cruel to it for example the kid CUT the iguanas tail off. Well where it grew back from that point all down the tail it goes from light brown to black i am worried about an infection and there isn't a vet around here who will see reptiles, What do i do? He is also very thin and dry because they were feeding him nothing more than lettuce. Any advice would be very helpful.
Thank you

Black is dead .. so it will need to be some how taken care of .. or it will kill the iguana or thats what i read anywny way

and for food greens .. are perfect give mustard ,collard greens as a start ... for your iguana .
i would consider getting calcuim with d3 and vitamins too knowing the previous owner was so horrible i bet he did not give it the calcuim it needs

make a plate up and i usually sprinkle calcuim a bit on top of it . ( some iguanas are picky )
i would expcially get the right heating and uvb on her or him and not really bother it i bet its stressed enough with its tail and being moved and all

really i hope you find a vet close ... your friend needs a nice check up ... and im probley seeing sergery for the tail .. part thats black .

good luck christina

Thanks i have started him on the right food and calcium, i have to go tonight to joneboro to get the heating and lighting thats a 2 hour drive. If anybody knows of a herp vet around jonesboro, arkansas let me know but memphis is a bbit too far if i can prevent it.
thanks

Black doesn't necessarily mean dead. In most cases new regrowth will be black and kind of rubbery feeling. If it is black, hard, and brittle feeling then it most likely is dry gangrene and needs to be amputated. Check out this website to see if there is a vet near to you. Good luck.

Pretty girl. They have such soulful eyes, don't they?

She's not the nicest girl but I love her just the same.

That girl just needs some jiffy lovin'! Send her here and I'll have her eating out of your hand and using a napkin in no time. LOL Honestly, none of my 5 Rhinos have that kind of attitude. They are all sweeties.
