Western Husbandry

burmaboy Oct 03, 2007 09:36 PM

Hi all...need some info/help.
I keep mostly large boids...burms...dumerils etc.
But my son has his first snake, a western hognose.
We have had this snake for a year, and it has doubled in size, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how.
He hardly eats. Maybe one fuzzy every five weeks, though he is offered food every week. He's onl shed twice within this past year.
So I'm thinking it's my husbandry. Temps mid 80's, 40%-50% humidity...cypress mulch substrate...daylights...UVB lights just because it's part of the lighting fixture...multiple hides.
He's healthy...and happy...easily handled and curious.
Just eats when he feels like.
Anything I can do to improve his eating? I'd love to add some more weight to him before winter sets in, and he totally goes off feed.

I can’t tell you how to get him to feed more often but when he does feed use a pair of tongs and hold another mouse at the butt of the other mouse and follow the first one into the mouth so he gets a double feeding. I think its called choo choo training

Along this same line, I picked up a couple of hatchling westerns about three weeks ago which haven't taken a meat at all. I've tried just about eveything (braining, tuna scent, placing in small brown bag over night with pinkie). Should I be concerned or might they just be off feed and able to wait till spring to eat? Thanks for any info.
