Soaking

tinker1219 Oct 03, 2007 11:25 PM

How long do I let my box soak each day? When do I start? I live in the middle of Colorado. I built an outdoor pen and plan to let him hibernate outside. I built a three foot "sleep" house and buried it two feet into the ground. I then it filled with leaves, peat moss and straw. It is getting so cold now but every morning he is walking around REAL slow, I guess my question is how do I know when is he going to go down for the winter because I still need him to soak? Any help is so much appreciated.. So for the long post.. Thanks Again

In the middle of Colorado is 2 feet below the frost line? it certainly isn't here in Iowa, I am concerned that you might run the risk of having a rock solid frozen turtle, I don't take any chances, see my post under "feeding before hibernation" just below this post. Do you have access to a basement that stays about 55-65 degrees? that would be much safer in my oppinion, why take chances in the northern most part of their range? All you have to do is sprinkle water over the substrate once a month or so to keep it moist but not soggy, and keep a water dish availible, although mine have never ever used it.
