Compare Crested vs Leopard Gecko care

DrSteveB Oct 04, 2007 12:21 PM

The question is the relative pluses and minuses of of Crested Gecko compared to Leopard Gecko as pet; particularly ease for a newbie. I asking on behalf of my sister and her 8 year old daughter who are new to this (I am experienced with Beardies but not Geckos).

Leopard:
- Tank has to be heated and temperature controlled, but dry.
- Carnivore, must get crickets and worms.

Crested:
- Tank has to be get humid, but not as temperature controlled; forest-jungle like.
- Omnivore, can be kept exclusively on commercial food, baby food with powder supplement (i.e. don’t have to get live insects several times per week).

Handleability of Crested vs. Leopards?

Other points of comparison?

Other suggested "starter" lizards?

I'm guessing you'll check both places, but I posted a thesis on my opinions on the crested board, I got a little carried away, sorry.

Again, welcome and thanks for asking your questions ahead of time.

I don't have any experience with Cresties, but I would imagine that they are harder to deal with than Leos. I am basing this on the fact that Cresties can climb anything, but Leos are at least limited to the ground. As far as a starter lizard, I'd go with a Leo, or a Northern Blue Tongue Skink. I am probably a little biased, but both are a lot of fun. The BTS can get pretty large though, and it requires more care and specialized equipment. But, they are tons of fun, and probably better to handle than a Leo.
