I'm not sure I would say it's all too common, but it certainly isn't rare. Did you introduce the male to the female a second time after the first clutch? I believe females have the ability to retain sperm from a productive copulation by the male. If she had good body weight and energy after the first clutch, there is no reason why she couldn't double clutch.
Also, just as a side note... I would strongly advise against feeding more than one snake at a time in the same container. If more than one were to get a hold of the same food item, that could cause problems because it is more difficult for them to let go due to the nature of rear fangs.

Yes, I did reintroduce the male and female. No, I normally don't feed them together, but the Easterns are sometime finicky so this is the way I "weed out" instant feeders. When more than one go for the frog, I'll let them have it and as their eating I'll cut the frog in half or thirds so they all eat. The ones that eat right away seem to get a real jump start over the others. Kevin
