Excavator substrate alternative?

i was reading that clay can be incorporated into sand in many desert vives to create a semi firm substrate for which herps to dig burrows into. I know about Zoomeds excavator and have used it extensively w/ great results but its a bit pricey. i wish to replicate this for a more economical price. anyone know of a clay i could incorporate inteo it? If so send a reply my way.
