Suggestions on Temp homes for thumnails that are past froglet stage.

shopaholic May 22, 2003 11:00 AM

So I'm headed up to Frog day and I'll be trying to get some Vents or Imitators. Hopefully I can get a trio that's either close to breeding or already old enough to. The tank I want them in ( a final home) will probably not be ready. For this age of thumnails, what is the best temporary home, say for about 2-4 weeks? Thanks

When I got my fantasticus in February, I setup a ten gallon tank with a simple gravel substrate, a philodendron and a couple chunks of moss, and a couple film canisters for hiding places. It worked so well as a temporary home, I've left it setup of future additions to start in.

Do you happen to sterilize before another frog uses the home? Thanks for the info!!

I don't know that it's sterile, but I clean the tank out well between uses. Also, since I'm not getting frogs on a regular basis, the tank gets it's own quarintine with nothing in it.

One more Question, if you wouldn't mind. How do you have your Film Canisters situated? Thanks again!

For my fantasticus, and most thumbnails, I place them on a 45 degree angle. Tor Linbo's research shows however that the imitators like their's upside down.

Upside down? Do you mean like hanging partially off the ground and upside down and over a branch so they can perch there with an awning over them? or sitting upside down on the ground-then, how do they get in? Ah, the things we get into for our froggies! I feel like going to Frog day is the equivalent of going to a Star Trek Convention!! No one in my circle of fiends understand what the heck I'm doing. Thank God I have you folks on the forum!!!

Here's a link to Tor's site:

Click on the "Adults" button to go to a list of species. The orientation is mostly for breeding reasons, but I put the canisters in like that starting young so the frogs can get used to them.

Hello,
When my imitaor froglets morph out I set them up in a plastic shoebox with damp paper towels and a cutting of potho and a small cork bark cave.I want to monitor their feeding so it's alot easier to see fruit flies on the paper towels. They are quite shy so it's better to have them in something small rather then putting them in a big enclosure right off.Once they are past their shyness I would put them in a viv but the one's I have raised have all been sold but that is how I'd do it.Hope this helps.
Mark

Hey Mark, Thanks for the info! Do you suppose that shyness can be decreased by giving them more room though? I mean, I wonder if smaller spaces actually cause them to protect their territory even more. Did you have yours in a group or singly in each shoe box? Thanks!!
