eye problems

captotterboy Oct 05, 2007 09:58 AM

Hello
I have a problem that appeared in a couple of this past years babies. Four of them started to develope eye problems at the same time. It looked at first like some shed got into the eye, but by the time i saw it, the shed had tried into a crust. The eyes got infected so i talked to a vette. No parasites, but before we could get a follow up visit, the geckos dies (either from infection or starvation/stress im not sure) unfortunatly, the geckos that died got thrown out before i could take them to the vette for an autopsy. Anyone have any thoughts about whats causing this? it is a humidity issue that is just effecting younger geckos?
the babies in question were kept on paper towels and had a warm and cool hide and a wet hide. They were fed mealworms. Temps inside were 80 on cool end, low 90's over heat

I had similar problems when I first started breeding, and I would say that yes, it is a humidity/temperature problem. I started keeping a bowl of water with cotton in it along with the normal shed box etc. and would often see the babies laying on cotton prior to shed. Since I started doing this 5 years ago, I haven't had a baby lose a toe or have eye problems. For the first 2 years I bred, I would have to finish thier sheds for them with a pair of tweezers (quite difficult on the tiny ones as you can imagine).

You don't want the cage to be a jungle, but their needs to be plenty of access to humid conditions for the first few months. The same thing can happen to adults that aren't provided with a humid nesting box or something similar. I see it all the time at pet stores where the geckos have a couple of sheds built up on their toes, and sometimes in their eyes.

I keep my babies on paper towels, which are wet daily. I use UTH, so they dry out in a few hours, but it provides the added humidity. I have never had to remove shed from a baby. Knock on wood, I'd hate to stress out one that small like that!

i had a simlier problem wiv my albino when he was a couple of months he got shed stuck in his eye, i got some drops from the vet and was told to put em in 3 times a day and clean them with a damp cotton bud before the drops went in, when i cleaned it after a couple of days the shed in his eye came out, i contiued puttin the drops in to kill any infection for another 2 days, unfortunalty he is blind in this eye now but he is still alive and doin well nearly a year old now. his other eye started to go the same but i just kept cleaning it and it went away.
hope this helps

Sorry to hijack the post, but I have a 5 year old leo with a major eye problem, like these. Yes, I'm going to the vet. His eye is very swollen, he certainly can't open it. Anything that I can do other than taking him to the vet?
