Q about tank size

rheenie Aug 22, 2003 11:07 AM

i'm getting a new baby corn, and the lady at the pet store told me to put the baby in my 30 gal tank and then I wouldn't have to change tanks till he is an adult, I thought this sounded odd, and I've heard you should keep a baby corn in a ten gallon untill theyre about 12 inches long, is this true? the baby is about 9 inches right now

Snake length can be hard to estimate accurately. Bill Love has never seen a corn less than 10 inches long (The Corn Snake Manual). IMHO, yours is probably closer to 12 inches than 9 inches.

Is the person at the store trying to sell you a tank?

You can keep a corn snake in a 10 gallon tank (20x10x12 inches) until its nearly three feet long. That's when you'd want to move up to a 20 long or 30 long.

I had a corn hatch out at about 9" this year, but he was the runt of the clutch and hatched out with a ball of yolk still left unabsorbed. The rest of them hatched out at 10.5". 9" is really small, this guy was barely large enough to eat a newborn pinkie.

I think most people keep snakes in WAY to small of an enclosure.Get it the 30 gallon tank this way as it grows it wont be cramped till you get a bigger tank.
Sure you could get it a 10 gallon but why do that intime it will need a bigger tank anyway and it will take advantage of the 30 put branches in it and you will see your baby corn will love it.
I usually go to kingsnake/milksnake forum where its the same thing snakes are housed in small enclosures.I just got a baby snow corn 1 month ago its housed in a 40 gallon it climbs, etc and really uses all the space intime it will be housed in a bigger tank.So get it the 30 you will enjoy your snake "expolring"and your snake will get exeresice.A cornsnake given a large enclosure with branches will certainly use them given a small enclosure with no room for climbing will just for the most part sit there.
