cage cleaning

alreynolds2003 Aug 22, 2003 11:27 AM

hello, i have a cage in my room that is immovable at the moment. I was wondering how I can clean it. I got a squirt bottle filled with a solution that is a gallon of water with 2 bottle caps of bleach, is that strong enough?? i got a squirt bottle i can use as well for getting the cage itself. if i dont have anythign roaming in the cage besides my cham his food is in a cage outside which i clean weekly. i have a live plant and the rest are artificial in my cage. should i even clean it if i dont have anything else in the cage otherwise how often should i clean it?

Using a diluted bleach cleaner is OK as long as you let everything set long enough to dry completely. Just for that reason, I use two different cleaning techniques.

For articles that are removable, I use an antibacterial dish soap and the hottest water that I can get, and soak everything in a tub for about 15 minutes.
Next, I take a paper towel and water, and remove all of the big stuff from the cage and wipe everything down.
Then, I take antibacterial cleaning spray (from big apple herp), and wet the entire cage down. I let it set for at least 10 minutes, and then wipe everything down again until it is dry.
Finally, I remove my items from the tub, and dry them off..

After assembling the cages back to normal, I put the animals back in and I'm done.

If you clean the cages often enough (once a week) they won't get to the point where you need such a strong cleaner.

Honestly, I would use antibacterial dish soap before I would use bleach. If your cage is in really bad shape, I would soak it down in bleach, let it set, flush it out with water, wipe it down and give it a ton of time to dry out.

Your ratio sounds good. Two capfulls of bleach / gallon of water.
