Question About Sulcata Eating Ivy

MonkeyLove Aug 22, 2003 11:38 AM

Hello All,

A couple months ago, my girlfriend and I bought a male sulcata from a friend. We recently built an outdoor pen for it and wanted to plant some ivy around the fence so it will grow up and around and through the fence so the fence looks nicer and so Howie (our sulcata) can eat the Ivy if he wants.

I was wondering if anyone knows if Ivy is safe for sulcatas to eat. We mainly feed Howie hay and occasionally commercial tortoise food, but before we built his pen in the back yard, he was on our screen porch and I know he ate a couple Ivy leaves while he was there. They didn't seem to hurt him, but I want to make sure Ivy is okay for sulcatas. Thanks.

Hi, Bryan--

I believe ivy is toxic, so I wouldn't recommend it. Check out CTTC's website (www.tortoise.org); they have recommendations for edible plants, and also a list of poisonous plants.

Thanks Jeannie,

I found the info...too bad, I've got tons of ivy growing around my house that I could have transplanted. Oh well, I guess I'll use Balcon Geraniums...they'll be prettier than Ivy anyway. Thanks again.
