Striped Albino King, does it make a good first snake?

bobbthompson Aug 22, 2003 11:38 AM

I have never had a snake. I really like the looks of striped
albino california king snakes. I saw one at a natural science
museum and fell in love. I know that they grow to 4-6 feet.
I know that I should go to an expo, and find a CB that eats
dead mice well. I know it will probably need a 30 gal tank
with an under tank heating pad on one side. I know that kings
are relatively easy-to-take-care-of, hardy snakes. What I
don't know is, do they make good pets? I know a snake is not
a dog, it's never going to fetch my slippers or lick my face.
But will a striped albino king ever show any affinity
towards it's owner? Do they like to be handeled? What kind
of relationship can one expect to have with a snake? I guess
my real question is: If I buy a king, am I getting a science
project, or a pet?

At first, a king will treat you like a predator as when they are handled in the wild it generally means they are going to be eaten. Ive heard that they will get to know their owner and not have a problem being handled. I just picked up a few babies and they dont really have a problem being held, but they dont like to be picked up. They tend to settle easily. They are also fun to watch eat, they strangle their victims and proceed to swallow them whole (some snakes wont let you watch them eat though). I think they are great as pets, and probably a good first choice as they are fairly simple to care for.
