Newbie questions and calci-sand

SKY_NAS Aug 22, 2003 11:46 AM

I have new babies, they are hatchlings, very tiny. Our pet store recomended the calci sand but I worry about breathing probs because it is so fine and impaction.
Also, I have had them home for almost a whole day and two of the three don't seem to be eating much, (about one pinhead each)
I have romane lettuce in tiny bits and parsley in one container and baby beardie food soft and soaked in another tiny dish.
They look so tiny in the great big aquarium! They are active and playing though.

First of all, do NOT buy calci sand.

If they are very young, I would suggest paper towels, I keep my babies on them till they are 2 - 3 weeks old.
I don't know how many you have together or what size tank your using, but too many animals in the same tank can cause stress and not eating. Also, if the tank is too big, it makes it hard for them to catch their food.

Make sure your basking temps are good.. around 105 - 110 (surface temp)

You could always put the crix in the fridge for a minute before feeding, it slows them down alot.

Hope this helps.

One other thing, don't feed them just romaine. They should be getting the following greens as a stable (at least two of them every day): Collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, enchive, escarole. For variety, mix in parsley, turnup greens, radish greens, chopped mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, string beans), zuccini, bell peppers. As occaisonaly treats you can use any non citris fruit (strawberries, melons, grapes etc),

I am not exactly sure how old they are. They are only about 3" long. There are 3 of them and I have them in a 29gal long aquarium. The cooler end of the tank is about 85 to 90 the basking spot is about 100-105.
A far as veggies, I was told to introduce different veggies every couple of days to get a better idea which they like and which they digest better. was that valid advice?
As I said, I have so many questions. I have read the books, but so many of them have differing info.

they need 2 week olds or 1/4 grown, the basic rule is no larger than the space between their eyes to the tip of their nose.

If you are using real pinhead size, they probably have little interest in that, its like giving you a sliver of potate chip and not the whole chip

I also agree, no sand or cali-sand or repti-sand for babies, but extend that to they are much larger around 12 inches.

The pet shop called them pinheads, but the crickets vary in size from white 1/4" to brownish 1/2". I thought I studied up enough before I got these little guys, but I am finding more questions and things I need to learn as I go along. I want them to be as healthy as I can keep them and happy!

You will learn lots here, many good people and a wide variety of way people do things, not all work for everyone, but it gives you the bases to decide what works best for you and them. And we sure don't always agree , but that makes it interesting also..... not necessarly one right and another wrong, just different ways
