Striped copperheads

viandy Oct 07, 2007 07:52 PM

A few days ago there was an ad for a striped copperhead here on Kingsnake. Very interesting looking snake. I sent the ad to a friend who is VERY interested in copperhead abberancies, but when he checked the link the ad was gone. Could the poster (or someone else) put the pic up and let me know?
Also, in the ad other striped copperheads were alluded to. Is this a proven trait?
That reminds me of the very neat copperhead that was on the SEHHS site. Anyone know if it was ever proven, is still alive, etc?
And what about the group of hypos that was sold at Hamburg a few years ago? I remember seeing that the buyer had posted them for sale a short while later. Any word on those?

The striped copperhead's that were for sale were hets, not the 100% stripes. To me, nowadays, anyone can say a snake is a het for anything, so it's a gamble.

The hypos that were for sale awhile back have changed hands quite a few times. IMO, they were no different than many of the southern, light phase copperheads that have been available, except someone decided they were hypo and sold them to an eager buyer, who then sold them to another, who then.....

I know the guy who posted them for sale, Tom is right, they are hets. The picture attached is from the original female caught many years ago by a friend of mine (prior to 2000) she's still alive but I don't believe she's reproducing anymore. However the striping has been proven through several generations.
The picture of the female was scanned from one those "old time real photographs", before I even had a digital camera

Wow, just saw the signature line on my post, I guess it's been a while since I've posted on this forum

You're right, it was hets for sale, wasn't it. I just had the photo of the striped in mind when I wrote that.
While I don't doubt the veracity of the seller, or of you Eric, striped is one of the "morphs" I'm most leary of. I've produced some fantastic striped carpet pythons when my incubator has gone out of whack, I'm sure the same thing can happen with temp variations for livebearers. I'm believe we're all in agreement that traits have to be proven, if someone says "it's just got to be genetic!", well, no, it doesn't.
Thanks for the quick replies and posting the photo.
Andy
PS -- was there any locality / supspicies info on that female?

I agree, there are deffinitly stripes that are not genetic. However, I believe these are. The original female was gravid when captured and gave birth to a liter of normal looking neonates. Those were then raised up and the siblings were bred together (and I believe one male to the mother) and stripes were produced from the normal looking offspring. This was repeated in several generations as well as some outcrossing done to unrelated snakes I believe.
The original female is from St. Tammany Parish (County) Louisiana

i have the southern hypo's mom....i also have a hypo from coastal south carolina...along with a hypermelanistic...some stripes...and the spotted blood line...i have also produced some pastel type babies....unlike the fella who said stripes and hypos aren't genetic, i believe they are and should be producing both within the next couple years...i've seen hundreds of south carolina coppers and none come close to my pink boy.....spotted copperheads have been proven genetic and i believe the stripes will be next year....true people should trust who they purchase their animals from, but others should not bash what they don't know about...
