atlas511 Oct 08, 2007 02:05 PM

I had a 17' female Normal het albino slide the glass door open during shedding. She is a beast and wedged herself across the cage and slid the glass door open with ease. BE CAREFUL!!!! thank god the room door was locked because she would of made a quick snack of my cocker spaniel. this happend at about 3 am, i thought some one broke in when i heard he body hit the floor and take down a shelf and step ladder. LOCK YOUR VISION CAGES!!!!! i have her in a 632

Not only must you have a lock for your Vision cages but you must place a 5/16" wooden dowel rod above the glass inside the track. This keeps them from lifting the glass out of the track. I've had this happen a few times over the years. Since placing the dowel rods above the glass and using a wire lock as shown below I have not had an escape. Well, there was that time when one broke through the glass. I do not know how to prevent that one.

depending how many cages you have or money i should say. you can get your glass laminated with or without wire.i have never had the glass break but im sure it suck when you have nowhere to put a 16 retic!

I now keep spare replacement glass on hand. Even I have accidentally broke the glass once it was out of the cage. It pays to be prepared.

This probably applies to any cage with sliding glass. We had a burm open the glass on a Neodesha. We were lucky to get her back. (We didn't bother with a pin since the glass fit pretty snug on this cage. Lesson learned.)

I 've heard stories like this all the time. Broken glass, snakes opening doors etc. You figured this happens so much we would quit using them but do we????NO! Maybe someone we engineer a stronger more efficient cage for large boids.
