Snake drool (semi-long post)

caine53 Oct 08, 2007 11:00 PM

My question is this, do snakes salivate? More specifically ball pythons? We have been slowly switching our balls from mice to (small frozen) rats with varying degrees of success. Our 900 gram male took one one week but for the next two weeks, did not seem interested. The first week he refused the rat we fed hiim his normal two large mice. The second week he refused, we only gave him one mouse in hopes he would be hungry enough to eat the first thing we put in front of him the next time around. The lone mouse obviously left him hungry because he was cruising his tank much more than usual. When we took him out to feed him this afternoon, clear, unscented liquid poured from his mouth. It wasn't right away, but after we handled him for a few minutes and tried to weigh him. It only happened once and his mouth did not appear overly wet upon inspection. Plus, he was not wheezing or popping. After that, with a little coaxing, he took a rat and looked fatter than ever. Do balls salivate when they are extra hungry or should we be scheduling a vet appointment? We have never seen this before. Thanks in advance.

Although this has never happened to me, I've heard that sometimes if your snake has just drank before you take them out, there's a possibility that some water will leak back out.
IMO, it's probably nothing to worry overly about.

I never thought about that. Even though he was in his hide when we took him out to feed, he had been in and out so much that he could very well had taken a drink. Thank you for your reply.

No Problem.
Keep an eye out, but I bet he's fine and well.
