Brumation in a warm apartment...

bakeaway Oct 09, 2007 10:18 AM

I live in Los Angeles and am planning on breeding my eastern king this year for the first time. The only thing is my apartment never really gets cold enough, even in an unheated area as a closet.Any ideas? I have never brumated my eastern before and every year she has laid about 7-8 infertile eggs. So do I need to cool her down?
Thanks

I live in L.A. too. Your problem is the likely with the male.

Never had Eastern kings, so take any info I give with that in mind.

You can try longer cooldown time and no light for 3 and 1/2 months. You can also try a large cooler with a small lunch-box-sized ice pack placed in there wrapped in a towel each morning (be careful, and test temps before placing snakes inside.)

I got great breedings when I kept the male and femal together in the same large container over Winter. They seemed much more in sync with one another.

I also live in LA. You can also buy a little refrigerator and place them in there. I've brumated kings like that before. If you do decide to use one, you'll have to experiment with the temps. I leave the door on mine cracked about an inch, otherwise it gets too cold.

Hey,
Thanks to both of you for the info. I am gonna try the cooler thing. Or I am going to see about keeping them in the wine room at my work, it runs around 55F-60F and dark almost all the time.
This is my first time breeding, have keep snakes for 6 years.
Now if I end up with alot of babies,,,then what...lol

I live in Charlotte NC, and while it does go into the 20's, I don't heat my apt in the winter, and it stays about 62- the orchids love it. However, it was not cool enough to get my Cal Kings to want to breed. My land lord is a snake enthusiast and he has given me a key to the basement of the building, so I can hibernate my snakes. You might try contacting your landlord or building manager and see if that might work. Granted I have an unusual situation in that he even put my snakes and tarantulas on the contract as being ok-- And he even brought me mice he killed in his traps from his farm to feed my snakes (of course I froze them for at least 2 weeks before feeding them). THATS what I call a good landlord!
