We found this guy crossing the road while driving to Orlando from Daytona. It was on the side of this major highway. Now, if you are from Florida it's probably no big deal but I got a big kick out of finding it.

I'm a northern boy. Is that a terrapin?

I'm a FL. native and I say it IS a big deal! I love them and hate how they've been declining year by year. This is Florida's most important herp.(in my opinion) Literally hundreds of organisms are interdependant with the gopher tortoise. The "incidental take" permits are a joke to me. Simply a license to kill these wonderful creatures. Anyway, great shots. Tell everyone you know just how cool you really think they are.

Were you at the Daytona show recently? I did a little herping in the Carolinas, while there, but didn't find too much.

I do too . I have three species of non native torts and love them a lot . I agree that the gopher tortoise is very important to Florida and to the other states it lives in . some herps use the gopher tortoise burrow for shelter and ( I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong ) if memory serves ( it may not as I have a bad cold ) the burrowing owl uses them as well .
