Need help from Mali uro owners

Sunfox Aug 22, 2003 01:08 PM

I'm tired of wandering around and dealing with these pet store clerks that say they know all about uros and they don't even know what they're looking at when they see one! So I'm asking for help from all mali uro owners. If possible, can you either post or send me some pics of your uros' femoral pores, body, and head shape in order to have something to compare to my uro? I'm trying to determine it's gender since it'll be a year old on Sunday. Anything would be helpful at this point.

Thanks

At a year old...you should be seeing slight male or female characteristics....the pores at this are are hard to tell i find.
So look at it's head...is it blackening up? is it exibiting male behavior...I only have one male...and he acts way different then the ladies..lol but look at the colours...at a year you can tell most of the time

Thanks for the tip. Ra has blackened a bit about 2 months ago and some yellow is starting to show. His coloration is still sandy colored when he's heated up. The pores have enlarged quite a bit in the last few months.
As for male/female behavior, what behaviors should I be looking for? I'm still pretty new at this so some description of both types of behavior would be very helpful.

Thanks

Well, My male will do a circle danace around his food dish or other furniture in the cage (marking his territory) also, he will sometimes headbob...especially at the other 2 females I have. I have found the male to be the less skiddish of the 3, and is quite calm ussually all the time. On the other hand, one of my females will actually flip over on to her back when i sometimes pick her up or pat her in the cage. This is a submissive thing...and only females do this. I have found also that the females are more timmid than my male. When you get a second uro...introduce them to a new cage....if you introduce the new one to the old ones old cage...you might see some behaviour that would indicate a sex. if the old one is aggressive or head bobs or circles around things...then male it is...especially if it starts bitting the new one's sides, back or tail. well, I hope this helps

He definitely hasn't ever flipped on his back for any reason. He hasn't headbobbed or done circle dances around his stuff. Every day, he runs the entire parameter of his enclosure, walking over (not under or around) anything that stands in his way. He also holds his head up high in the air with his front arms stretched so his front toes are hardly touching the ground. He also likes to observe things by sitting on the highest point in his enclosure.
At mealtime, he often welcomes my hand by running right up to it and he has nipped at my fingers now and then (not maliciously though, just playfully). Do these behaviors mean anything?

That means your uro is large and in charge, or in other words the king of the territory. Your animal is the dominant one in the cage lol. What color is it. If it is over one year old and is tanish it is probably a female. IF it is starting to get yellow on the back, and is starting to get black on the arms legs and head, that means it is a male.

He will be a year old tomorrow. He has started to darken pretty much all over the past 3 months. He has shed again and his back is yellowing, several yellow spots have developed and his tail (after the shed) is turning yellow. I'll post a pic as soon as I can.

Thanks for the help

Then he is probably a male. I am not sure but it sounds like you have a male just starting to show its colors. After you post the pic i will most likey be able to sex it.

Here's a pic of Ricos pores and the two noticable bumps indication of a boy. His head is also about 1 1/4 " wide...i believe. Ricos head is almost double the size of his girlfriends.
Hopefully i post the right pic.
