You underestimate the power of the Dark Side - Darth

mykee Oct 09, 2007 07:48 PM

From a non-dark-side breeder who actually is concerned for the health and well-being of thier animals, I have tried breeding smaller males, and most of them are just not interested. One male did breed... unsuccessfully......Go figure......

You're not seeing too many 9 year old dads trying to juggle the 3rd grade and child-rearing, and not many 6 month old, 300g sires.

JasBalls Oct 09, 2007 07:59 PM

Yes! And I never have a problem with my males feeding or getting sick. They are actually some of my best feeders after they turn 1 year old. I bred my mojave at an early age, He bred 13 girls this year and never missed a feeding. I'm not here to tell Everyone to do it or that every male can. I just know which males of Mine that can and will produce that young for me. Heck I have 2 year old males that I havent even bred yet LOL.. Just dont say I dont Love my animals. Because you are very Wrong!!

Cool him, your females and another male of similar size down for a month. Place him with a male of similar size for a bit.Let them get worked up and battle a bit. If hes a whimpy, timid one, b. e careful, you dont want him to get his butt kicked and make him even more shy. Watch them when the males are togther. Then put him in with the female. If shes just shed its even better, I believe they give off pheromones.

Good luck- some males will breed at 300grams just fine.

mykee Oct 10, 2007 02:58 PM

WILL breed at 300g
and
SHOULD breed at 300g

Yep! Your view is an empty incubator and a horney bp. Our view is a full incubator and a male snake with a big smile on his face. Not to mention More happy snakes and perhaps a few more dollars for there food.

Happy Herping!

Seems like just about every big to mid size breeder that I have spoken with has admitted to having at least one breeding incident if not more. Now whether they'd "man up" and admit it on an open forum is another thing - breeding related deaths aren't widely discussed. I've heard tales of everything from egg bound females, to RIs, to stress related problems, to young males that breed themselves to death.

That all those same problems can and do happen to Large breeding adult Bp's also. They are not exclusive problems to young males.
I wish I had Jas's talent fore getting young male (ball pythons) to breed!

It's a good thing our ball pythons are pets, with us being able to keep them from harming themselves! Now we can prevent all the teenage pregnancy, uncontrolled sex 'til they go blind or kill themselves, and overfeeding- things rampantly found in the wild, but now strictly controlled in our safer environments.

Without our interventions, ball pythons would cease to exist!
