Found 2 Box Turtles

OldTime Oct 10, 2007 08:37 AM

I Found these mating box turtles while on a walk yesterday in Pennsylvania. Are they mating, though, or fighting? The “female” look a lot like a male to me. I’ve seen males get stuck in that particular position (the one on the back) from combat.

I REALLY thought they were two males! Her eyes were so red she had the same size claws as her mate! So...does this mean I posted porn!?? Sorry.

I've seen some females with red eyes, but they are never quite that true, fire engine red that the males have.
And I don't think it qualifies as porn...maybe just a well-worn National Geographic....

OK, National geographic I can deal with. Thank you for the reassuring words. I was beginning to feel a bit sordid, lol.

notice how the pupils on the male are smaller, the females pupils are fuller sized even though the color is red, I have noticed this to be a good indicator of male versus female in juvies more than color, anyone else noticed that difference?

Hey, that’s really interesting. I looked through some other turtle photos I have taken and found another female with red eyes. I compared it with the male I found yesterday and you’re absolutely right! The female’s pupils are larger! I never heard of this before. I’m pretty sure the light conditions were similar in both environments so you might be onto something.
