Male Rhino Protected me...maybe?

hpimichael02 Oct 10, 2007 09:54 AM

hey guys,

this was just weird, i was in my enclosure with my male and female rhino , and i wan on my hands and knees inspecting for ants , and seeing where they were comming from , and my 8 yr old female rhino started threating me , like rushing towards me gapeing and head bobing, and my male was on the other side on the enclosure, and when she was doing this he came running over and chased her away biting her tail and neck, and then he came and brushed up on my legs and sat next to me just head bobing back at the female, ive had my male for over a year now and im always with him holding him and taking him places onmy shoulder so i guess we have boned a trust with each other, i just thought it was crazy how he chased her away from me like he was trying to protect me or somthing,

any one else had something liek this happen???

Mike

is it possible he anticipated feeding time, and scared her away so he could get more food for himself, or do they usually share food?

i always have two feeding bowls(dog size bowls) filled with greens and marion dried food or mazuri dried food, with puree banana's and papaya and mango's in the mix(the dried food is soaked in the puree for better taste) and i have two bowls that way there is no fighting over who gets to eat first and when, they feed at 11 Am and at 3Pm there bowl gets taken away at 12:30Pm and taken away aging when they go to sleep at night, this happened between feeding times

Maybe he thought the female was really bobbing at him and was trying to assert his dominance over her. I know my iguana headbob at me from time to time when I touch him or pick him up. Or maybe he was trying to assert his dominance over her at the time she was charging you, so the whole thing could just coincidence.
