Just a few questions...not too important

FrostDragon Oct 10, 2007 11:28 AM

Hey all, I haven't posted in a really long time! Well, I kind of have a small question about Sora and his eating. Well, maybe about a month ago my Dad bought some Superworms for him, and he ate three that day! Over the following few weeks until now, he doesn't want them anymore! I have tried during every feeding time to give him at least one superworm but he only wants the crickets. I do know that crickets are healthier...? And that's a good thing, but I was just wondering why he doesn't want them anymore when he had three of them the first time he ever saw them.

Another question is:
How should I make Sora happier? He seems really bored a lot lately and I have been feeling bad about it. I never really hold him anymore because he is just too spoiled or something and just gives me a hard time when I spend time with him. Like, I'll take him outside with a leash on so he doesn't run away (he's a good boy) and he throws a temper-tantrum! I mean, the leash isn't too tight or uncomfortable. And when I hold him inside the house without the leash he likes to just annoy me! I'm not saying it's a bad thing and I totally hate him I just feel bad because he's my life and so far I haven't been including him in any of it. And if you really, seriously read this whole thing, thank you.

Love, Eclipse

I would suggest not to feed super worms as they are hard to digest from what i read but im sure with such few she will be fine from eatting them not sure why she stopped eatting them maybe she is bored of them ?
stick with crickets .. have you tryed meaile worms ?... there smaller and easyer to digest and you can use them on and off ... like crickets
or did you mean meailie worms and ment super worms by mistake ? ..

and for making a gecko more happy ?? a bigger cage 29 gallon? possibly make it the best habiat possible i would suggest
leopard geckos are not really a pet to hold
and im sure if you harnest a leopard gecko they would not like it
i personlly think they are fine with eating there crickets and exploring while your watching them on a bed ..i would never leash one on a leash and walk it .. i dont think they would injoy that so much ? really ...
just my own suggestion though

OK, I also have a leash for my leos, one or two will tolerate it for a time, but it's not a normal feeling. I do not recommend taking them outside for extended periods, esp. during the day in the sun. As for the superworms, is not crushed and killed before they are swallowed, they can bite the leo from the inside, and this may be why Sora will not eat them anymore. And if you want to increase her happiness.....well, first remember that Sora is not a dog, chimp, or child. They really are happiest when left alone for the most part, and if she's annoying you during handling, I'd say she's trying to tell you something. You prob couldn't go wrong with a larger cage or a new design, provided you don't change things too much.

you can make your leo a bit happier i suppose by putting a covering on the back wall that's a surface she can climb on. usually its polystyrene, as its easy to get there claws in, but i put mine on a slight angle incase it slips so its not a sudden drop or anything. other than that im not really sure what you could do to make it more happier. maybe a hamsters wheel? lool

I think that I read somewhere never to leash a gecko. They dont like it and it can injure them if they flail and flip over ect.

as far as happyness mine love it when I add a new hide. If your tank is big enough you could try putting something else in.. i recently added a new moist hide ( number 2 for the tank) and they love it.

Thank you so much to everyone! Well...you're all right, and I agree. The leash is okay sometimes, and the only reason I take him outside is for a little sun and freedom. The tank is only a ten gallon the poor thing, because my parents won't let me get a bigger cage at all. And yes, I did mean superworms my Dad just randomly bought them. Well, I g2g I'll talk more later because I'm in class right now!

Thanks,

This may sound harsh, forgive me, I probably shouldn't be posting when I am having a bad day, but I feel for your gecko.

First of all, leashes/harnesses aren't really for geckos... Think about it, would you like to be woken up in the middle of your "night" to be dragged out and basked in the light of a burning star instead of sleeping comfortably in your warm little bed? Now bearded dragons on harness, completely difference story and a lot of fun.

I second the posted who explained about superworms. They are "the snack that fights back" you really need to have a gecko in good health with strong jaws and excellent calcium to kill the worms before eating. My girl loves them now that we've added them to her diet, but she's fully grown and 10 inches long with an attitude to match! (I love her.)

Your interaction may not be the answer to the boredom. What does he have for cage furniture? Stuff to climb on, stuff to hide in, ramps, hammocks, there are any number of "stuff" you can add to even a 10 gallon to add more living space and more interest to the gecko. I missed the size of your gecko, so I can't say for sure if you would be good to move up in enclosure size. (BTW, used ones are like $5, tell your dad and save your money)

Well, let's also look at your history with Sora, you've lost him for a significant period of time and he was ill/impactd later on for several weeks which seemed like you had some significant problems resolving. I wouldn't be all that happy with you either. I'm not sure what you mean by he throws a tantrum, but I guess you may be handling him in a way he doesn't appreciate or he's lost his trust in you in general. Remember these are "display animals" you can't necessarily "play" with them.

Now that I've said all that, all my leos have been hams and love to be handled, especially if they get to watch TV too. But we spent the time to develop a relationship with them early on. Now that they are adults we might go a few weeks without handling them, but we have a fully established relationship. Find Olstyn's post on how to handle a leo and try starting over, you might just have better luck.

I completely agree with sleepy on this issue. People often try to push "happiness" on their geckos, and try to determine their moods. I got a similar response to my use of slate in a post on another form, and got maybe 10 responses along the lines of "Oh my gosh! The ground is not soft! Where does your gecko sleep!" For some reason, those people seem to think geckos sleep on velvet in the wild.

Leopards are Nocturnal, why would you "walk" them in the sunlight?

Thank you all, like seriously, so much!!! To Sleepygecko: How do you get your gecko(s) to trust you? You're obviously really good with geckos. And you're right, maybe he is a little upset with me because of how I've been taking care of him. I mean, his illness had nothing to do with him being lost for that time, because yea he was impacted but that's my fault because I fed him with sand inside of his cage and he got sand swallowed with the crickets. And...for his size he's a little on the small side because he "ran away" for that time so he kinda stunted his growth, but he's still growing! (yay) I still have to measure him because he has just shed recently. Anyways, thank you SO much!! And can you give me some handling advice to get him to like to spend time with me more?

Thanks,
Eclipse

Oh yea, I forgot about the items in the tank and stuff about that. My Dad won't let me buy a tank no matter what the cost is, and he won't give me a reason. And yesterday I begged my mom to let me get this underground tunnel(it's sorta like a cave) I mean, you put it under the sand and its like a snake hole almost and you can see inside the cave because it goes on the side of the cage. Its hard to explain, but my mom wouldn't let me get it for anything! I was really mad...And again, she didn't give me any reason either! I'm telling you, it's not me, it's them.
