I Found Another!

OldTime Oct 10, 2007 06:45 PM

I took another stroll through the woods around my home today. Look who I found! He’s a different fellow from the one in my previous pic. That makes about 5 different box turtles I’ve discovered on a very small piece of property this season! I don’t expect to have many more encounters like this before the snow flies.

The first pic is just as he was when I happened on him. The last pic shows detail of some damage he sustained. This guy has had adventures!

I walked back right before sunset and he was burrowing under that log behind him. I guess he’s getting ready for the long nap

Wow! What a beautifully colored boxie. Maybe you'll see him again in the spring. ........ 9boxies

Wow! That is a reall looker, perfect in my opinion, most people always want that high yellow, but I personally like the red-orange better, and that red guy is incredible!!! It would be neat if you see him again in the spring and take some photos. Thanks for sharing, you are very lucky to have that in your won backyard.

I'm glad you and 9boxies and probably a few others liked the photos. I said before that I saw 5 box turtles on my property this summer...well, it's actually 5 and one adult, male, wood turtle. It’s so weird. There’s nothing else here! I don't see toads or snakes or lizards or possums or raccoons or chipmunks or squirrels or many different birds...just turkey, deer and turtles. The area seems to have an unusual abundance of these. When I lived in Jersey I could go YEARS before I spotted a wild BT!

i live in Iowa and we have tons of wildlife and tons of amphibians and reptile in our backyard too, but I would trade all the critters in my backyard to have boxies and wood turtles, I hope you realize how lucky you are and how envious some people are!!!

Yes, thank you. I realize it’s quite the thing! Like I said, in NJ I had none of this going on! But that’s all there is. I like salamanders also and toads...NONE! I also like possums and fox and some other cool critters I used to see in Jersey. It’s an odd mix of wildlife here. Anyway, here is another shot of the wood I saw earlier. I’m pretty sure I posted it earlier in the year.

Make sure you report these to pa fish and game.....box turtles are disappearing in PA, and the always want to know more about woods. I can get you a link if you need one.

Thanks, good idea. I have all the PA fish and game info I need though.

I was just looking at your turtle photos way down there from August. That’s really impressive . . . what sate are you in? Just curious.
