I have decided on play sand for the substrate. My question
is do you wash it before using? If so, what's a good way
to do it?

Definitely wash it to keep down any dust. We just place the sand in a large container & strongly hose it to overflow with lots of stirring until the water clears. Simpler than trying to screen it.
