ONE NEWS (Auckland, New Zealand) 06 October 07 Snake bites hand that saved it
A snake expert is recovering in Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) hospital after the red-belly black snake she tried to save bit her.
Snake expert Lyn Levy, 62, was rushed to RPA after being bitten in Marrickville in Sydney's inner west earlier today by a snake that had been run over by a car.
Her son, Ben O'Malley, said the experience hasn't changed their opinion on reptiles.
"We are licenced snake handlers so police called us to catch and release a red belly that had been run over," he told AAP.
"But when we were taking it to someone to look after it, it escaped in the car's boot and in the process of trying to recapture it, he bit her," he said.
The snake had been checked out by a vet and had broken ribs and internal damage.
"My dad has been bitten in the past but this is the first time for mother," O'Malley said.
Levy is in a stable condition.
"This hasn't changed my or my mum's opinion on snakes; I will still handle them," he said.
O'Malley said all snakes should be regarded as dangerous and not interacted with, and local authorities should be called.
