Last 2007 Rainbow Boa Litter

Jeff Clark Oct 10, 2007 09:53 PM

I got home from Florida this afternoon and Fiona had just delivered the last of her litter. The count is 18 live healthy babies, one stillborn fullterm, one premature and four slugs. There could have been other slugs devoured before I got home. Fiona was born here in 1999 from my Caat bloodline. The father of this litter is Lorio. I will try to post some PICs if I get some time. This makes a total of 150 live healthy baby Rainbow Boas for the year. 140 Brazilians, nine Argentinians and one Campina Grande.

Congrats. That's a great total. I'm sure there are lots of pretty ones.

Jeff Clark Oct 11, 2007 12:18 AM

Linda,
....Thanks, some in these last two litters should be the best of the year. Did you see the Peruvian I got from that I posted a PIC of last week? She just keeps getting better every time she sheds. Thanks a whole bunch!
Jeff

Hey Jeff, congrats on yet another good litter, makes for a nice round number, 150 total. I remember somewhere you mentioned you had not broken a 250 in one season goal which brings a question to mind. Wht was the count from your biggest year? Mine was the 136 (all BRB) I produced in 2005 from 6 viable litters.

Dave,
...Add one more to Fiona's litter for a 2007 total of 141 BRBs, 9 ARBs and the one Campina Grande. 1997 was my best year with 136 Rainbow Boas and 32 Jungle Carpet Pythons. The Rainbow Boas were mostly Brazilians with one or two two small litters of Colombians. My collection was smaller back then and the 120 to 125 BRBs must have been from 6 or 7 litters. My 141 live baby BRBs this year are from 8 viable litters. The only non-viable litter this year was Flo's delivery of 8 slugs. It will be very impressive if anyone beats your 2005 litter size numbers with the 136 in six litters.

Very impressive numbers, thanks for sharing that info and congrats again!!

Yeah, 2005 was simply amazing for me, average litter size was over 22 with only one litter less than 20 and that was 18.

This year is going pretty good at 19.5 average for the four litters born here. If you include Ann's first time litter bred with Mikes Male, the average is still 19. And I still have one more litter due in two to three weeks.

After I put Fiona back in her cage she laid one more good baby. I was hoping to have them sexed and to get them setup in individual boxes tonight but I have too much cage cleaning to do. I am eating a snack and taking a short break right now.

This is the premature baby from the litter. It was alive but still inside the membrane when I found it. There was quite a bit of soft yellow yolk material inside the membrane with the baby. The snake weighed 22 grams in comparison to the healthy babies in the litter which all weighed 29 to 31 grams. This snake had several kink deformities. Premature baby BRBs like this one are delivered at a rate of about one per hundred live healthy babies. Someone who had no experience with the birth of snakes might see this and think that it was amelanistic or hypomelanistic. Baby snakes have very little color until the last week or so before they are born or hatched. They develop the pattern fairly early in gestation but remain very pale until the last week of development. There was one stillborn fullterm baby in the litter which was approximately the same size as the healthy babies and had the same color. Rather than being delivered in the membrane most fullterm stillborn BRBs are delivered dead or near dead outside the membrane and they are probably the result of broken membranes which allow the baby to drown before it can be delivered. I have many times attempted to revive stillborn BRBs using external heart massage and mouth to mouth resuscitation. I have also intubated them with small bore human and veterinary catheters down through their glottis. These attempts have all failed. Occasionally a baby BRB is born that is outside the membrane and limp but breathing a little. These babies sometimes come around and are fine an hour after they are born.

waspinator421 Oct 11, 2007 04:59 AM

Wow, that is cool! At first I did think it was a Hypo. Now I will know not to get too excited if I ever have any pale premies in my future litters. Thanks for the great info!

Jasmine,
....It died soon after I took the PICs. Babies that are born slightly paler than normal and looking only a little premature often do well. When they are as premature looking as this snake was their lungs are probably not well enough developed to survive.

There are 8 males and 11 females in the litter. The babies are all 18 to 19 inches long and weigh 29 to 32 grams. The mother of the litter was born here in 1999 and she is around 6.5 feet long. The father of the litter is Lorio which is a 2002 or 2003 from Gary Lorio's collection. I did not observe any mating between these two snakes but Lorio was in with her several times in march april and may. Fiona looked gravid and had palpable lumps starting in may.

Ed,
...I do not have any Guyanans in my collection. When I had a litter of them in 1993 the babies were small and difficult to get started so I decided to not keep working with them. I have heard of other people having better luck with the babies though.
