D x C female breeding weight

fastjunkie Oct 11, 2007 05:14 AM

I have an '05 Diamond x Coastal female. She was somewhat of a troubled eater as a baby..wouldn't eat very much.By April of '07 she was only about 230g,but with a little work this year,I managed to get her to just under 1000g in less than 6 months. So here's my question...What is an average breeding weight for a female carpet?I realize age isn't the factor here,it's all about the weight.
Thanx all,
Mike

In my opinion, contrary to what all the breeders say, age can be quite important. 3 years is usually the miminmum to achieve any decent chance of success. Also, being a D X C, it looks like you'll have to get het to at least 2000 grams...again, in my opinion. Both Diamond and Coastal are on the larger side of the spectrum of the carpet complex. The smallest being IJs that can breed relatively well at weight as little as 1000 grams. But in the end, if the female cannot support the egg production, she simply will not ovulate.

Good luck!

overfeeding or "power feeding" can cause health problems such as obesity and infertility, lethargy and the like. Fast growing is bad news bears and you should back down if you want your baby to make babies.

Thanx guys!!!However,I did make a mistake in my earlier post..my female was 330g,not 230g like I posted. And she's only at 990g actual.I have no plans to breed this year, just though I would get a likttle insight now.
