A thermostat controls heat by constantly adjusting power to keep the correct temps. A rheostat is just a dimmer switch that must be manually controlled. For a UTH, I would suggest a thermostat. Just set it and forget it. Hope this helps

You know you're getting old when you make more noise getting up off the couch than you do during sex.
cool, thanks
Also what temp should i set it to?
That depends on a lot of things. What are you putting in the cage (snake)? What type of substrate? Where is the temp probe? Is it on the heat element or under the substrate inside the cage? You will need to take the temps inside the cage with a gun or a thermometer probe and adjust you t-stat accordingly.

Its a snake, yes. Aspen bedding.
But don't just set it and forget it. You need to verify the T-stat setting is giving you the temps you want in the cage. Even once you know what "number" on the stat gets you the sage temps you want you should still verify every once in a while with a temp gun. As room ambients change, so will cage ambients.
