Did my Snake Shed??

FlagSStaff Oct 11, 2007 12:28 PM

I picked up a one year old Thayeri a few weeks back and he's been very happy, eating well, etc. Middle of last week, he started to get milky, eyes all cloudy, etc. indicating Today, I went to change and clean his water dish and I noticed his eyes are back to normal and the first 1/3 of his body is nice and shiny, with therest slightly dull, but not milky. I searched all over the place for any type of shed skin, but couldn't find anything. Is everything ok? Should I be concerned? Thanks for any and all help!

You can relax as this is 100% normal... He will shed in a day or three!

Awesome! Thanks Mike! I'm still perplexed a bit about where on earth the first bit of shedding went... lol I guess I'll just watch and wait!

The skin is still on your snake... They turn gray as they go into shed, then they clear up prior to shedding...

Is this your first snake? (NOT being rude, just wondering)

Yes, this is my first snake. I'm LOVING it, though! It's actually my classroom pet for my 2nd graders and they love it too. Not allowing them to touch him yet, as he's still getting used to the environment. Any advice or tips anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated, though. Thanks!

Your doing the right thing by not touching him right now. You can handle them during the shed proses but very gently and briefly just to move them. If they get wild and you have to grip down to subdue them, that can rip the old skin and damage the new skin. After they turn gray they then turn back to normal but that skin is still there. It takes one to 7 days but usually 3 days to shed. The older they are the longer it takes to shed after they clear from that gray color.

OK, cool. I was actually hoping that he'd shed over the weekend, but I came in today and nothing. It's been 4 days, so I'm hoping he'll shed soon. Just in case he doesn't shed, what should I do? Thanks!

If he never sheds, soak him for an hour in warm water and pull the skin off your self. Make sure to get the eye caps.
