Wednesday morning I had to leave work for an hour to run around to my mother's house to wait on and accept a baby ball python being shipped to me. My mom usually accepts them for me but had a prior appointment. My boss knows I'm a wacko snake person, so she didn't even want to know about it...

Then Wednesday afternoon I had my annual mammogram appointment (ouch!). I couldn't leave the little guy in the hot truck - no shade in that parking lot. So I just carried the box in with me. I know those people in the waiting room and the technician were dying to know what was in that little box, but no one dared ask. I'm so glad they didn't!

While I wont be having any mammograms any time soon , Its funny when you tell people what pets you have and that you breed them as well. I have a few stories of cable technicians, salesmen, all kinds of blue color type workers who wont enter my snake room, but I tell them they wont harm you they are in a cage and some are even locked!!
Sheesh its like i am keeping some kind of nuclear waste in my house..

A couple of years back we had new windows installed, everything was fine until one of the installers realized what was in the funny looking boxes. Couldn't have gotten him outa ther faster if he was strapped to a titan missle. Absolutely refused to go anywhare near the room. The rest of the crew had to take up his slack in that room.

And I too will not be going in for any mamograms in the forseable future. Unless you include support for my wife who does have to get those things done!

Jason, you're right about that. I'm currently going thru the hassle of taking my washer and dryer to the shop rather than have a repairman come to my house. It would be just my luck the guy would be afraid to come in...

Like Jason and Dave i will not be getting any mammograms but I did just take my JCP, Serenity, into the living room where my roommates and some friends were watching movies. The reactions were priceless. Both my roommates didn't even flinch when I sat down between them with Serenity in hand (by now they're used to it). One of the girls saw it and started asking me questions about snakes and eventually held my CRB, Tempest, evidently her grandpa had kept pythons while she was growing up and she loves them, Her friend took a while to catch on what I had brought into the room but when she did she took off running and refused to re enter my apartment until I took Serenity back to my room. I just thought the range of emotion in the reactions were great they went from complete indifference to intrigue to complete terror despite being across the room from her.

yeah, I think the out of control crazy person angry response we get sometimes is very interesting. People that are usually perfectly rational will go into hysterics sometimes,(for this reason I never take my snakes out without asking everyone in the room first) but it's such an irrational over-the-top response sometimes that I wonder if it is left over from earlier times for survival.

Jeeze Tim, the "skin" on top is about 12 feet long. It stretched a bit when the boa that was wearing it "shed" it off.

She was about 10 1/2 - 11 feet long at that shedding. And all the "skins" are from the same animal. If you follow the strings you can see the same dorsal pattern tracked as the boa grew. Sadly she passed away a couple of years back.

Dave, I also had a co worker who refused to come into my office because I might have a picture of a snake on my computer. She never would believe me when I told her there were no pictures. She would come stand in the doorway, but never enter.

Yeah I usually ask but I was so far across the room that I didn't think it would matter. Boy was I wrong people can be ridiculous in their irrational fears. I would have to agree that because it's such an intense fear for no discernible reason that it has to be programmed into us from the past.

Tim,
...I used to see the same large range of emotions when I took snakes to the libraries for summer reading programs. Little kids are great, most of them were fascinated with snakes and I could have them at least touching a snake within a few minutes but there were still some that would stay all the way across the room. I do think people's fears of snakes are based upon the misinformation they have gotten from other people.

It sucks but fear of the unknown is Human Nature, I try to teach people that everything has a place. As everyone here knows snakes are extremely helpful to humans and should be treated as such, same with most insects and some arachnids and countless other species.
Sadly most of the people I know would rather kill a snake then call me to take it elsewhere and when they do kill they never have a good reason, being scared isn't a acceptable reason.
