Looking at Bloods...and there temperment

thecleaner Oct 11, 2007 07:04 PM

I've been thinking about getting a pair of nice blood pythons. What I really like about them is there coloration and size. They are like a big snake but don't get to long. My main concern is there temperment. I've heard mixed reviews on them. THe ones I've seen either could not be handled or they could be handled just carefully and cautiously. I would like a pair for breeding in the future, but until then, I want one that could be handled without the fear of getting "tagged" by one. I was thinking about maybe getting a sub adult or adult instead of a small baby. Like one that has been worked with before. What are you guys experiance with them and how often can you handle yours? Also, can someone point me in the right direction of someone respectable with good quality stock?
Thanks

A lot of their reputation comes from the years of wild caughts. I have kept a single borneo for a year now with no issues. And honestly it is the only female reptile in my house that has not tagged or tried to tag me. This weekend I added 2 more STPs, a borneo and a black blood. Perhaps with running a rescue here, I don't see temperment issues as fast as other would, because my tendency is to see nasty snakes. However mine has been sweet as pie. The only thing I really noticed different is mine are excessively active babies compared to other species I have kept here.

As to good breeders. Look at people signatures here. It also depends on what specifically you are looking at.

I have a baby borneo, CB from a good breeder, and I need to be cautious when handling him.

My question to the OP, why not just work with the babies so they are used to handling? Mine has responded great over the month I've had him.

It doens't hurt, that much lol

>>My question to the OP, why not just work with the babies so they are used to handling? Mine has responded great over the month I've had him.

Mine is handled with fair frequency. She started as a problem feeder so handling was far less. As she has finally taken on to regular feedings that I am happy with, handling has increased. I'm not objecting to the activity, however, I know some people get a smidge freaked about it, especially with the blood reputation.

I also don't forsee my bloods being a hands on type of educational animal. Perhaps when they get big, but I don't see them being a total lump like a few of our burms.

Now the new male borneo, we may have some challenges with him. Someone isnt too happy, but he also missed a feeding last weekend due to a show (where I picked him up). He was NOT happy with cage cleaning tonight when I pulled the wet paper out of his cage because he was hiding under it. WEEEE he is fast. But that again will take time.

Thanks for the replies. I mainly want to get a pair of nice red colored "normal morph" for pets that would be handled regularly. But would like to breed them when mature enough and when I'm ready. I'd like to get back into the reptiles, mainly Bloods and Balls.
