Iowa strain Snow Plains Garter

boxienuts Oct 13, 2007 12:22 PM

I purchased this gorgeous female from Scott Felzer a couple months ago, if you want a quality high end garter he's the man. She was an eating machine when I got her, Scott had her off to a good start, it didn't take long to get her to eat pinkies and now she is eating 3-4 fizzies twice a week and weighing 46 grams empty, and she is so docile and tame that when I handle her I don't even need to hold on like some of my other garters that would go airborne if you let them. I just love her...not in a creapy way, I'm happily married, but I told my wife that if she ever gave me the ultimateum - (it's me or the snakes)- the snakes would really miss her

What a great looking snake. I missed out on getting any morphs this year. Next year I will be "stocking" up though and starting some fun new projects.

Here's a flick of my "mamma" t. radix (nothing too special but still a beautiful snake in my mind). She's wild caught and had a couple babies very unexpectedly early this summer (she was much smaller than I thought they needed to be to reproduce). She started out being really jumpy and not that great of an eater but eventually took a fish scented pinky, tamed down, and is scarfing down whatever pinkies and fuzzies I give her and has nearly doubled in size.

I wonder if she was a yearling, maybe next year if you get a morph male to breed her, she will have lots of babies now that you are "beefing her up" on mice. Nice looking snake.

That's what I was thinking. Out of all the plains garter snakes I caught this year she had the brightest colors and "cleanest" pattern and was the only radix I kept. She seemed to brighten up even more after I had her for a couple months too. I'm hoping to get a snow male and two double het. females next year and probably won't breed her to the snow male until 2009. I have read that they can retain sperm so maybe she'll have another batch of normal babies next year (has anyone had this happen before? also, do they ever "double clutch"?). She only had two live babies this year and four stillborns. Unfortunately one of the babies escaped a couple weeks ago when I built a new rack system so I've only got the one baby now... Hopefully I'll find the other one soon. Both of the babies took to pinky parts immediately (one of them needed them scented with earthworms though) and the one I still have is feeding great every three days and growing like crazy. They're such fun snakes to have, it's a shame they're so often overlooked by reptile enthusiasts.

Here's a picture of the babies not too long after they were born. I wasn't expecting them so the cage was a little dry. After I moved them to their own cages they shed the rest of their skin just fine...

FYI those gray smudges aren't on the snake or the photo, the scanner must have been dirty or something.
