Newby morph question..

NCBoas Oct 13, 2007 04:11 PM

I am well equiped with a good understanding of the way genetics work since I work with boa morphs.. I visited the NARBC show today, in Tinley.. It's my daughter's birthday on the 18th, so I wanted to pick her up a pair of leopard geckos in an attempt to get her more involved in what I do.. We ended up snagging a male mack super snow and a ghost female.. I was told that the Ghost is a recessive trait. I know the outcome of the pairing will be all mack snows het ghost.. I can't seem to find a picture of the mack snow ghost or mack super snow ghost.. Is there a different designer name for that combo? Does anyone have a link to a comprehensive morph list with genetics information included? The pair are roughly 6.5", tip to tip. I have them set up in a 10g, slate tile substrate, humid hide on the warm side and dry hide on the cool.. I'm using an UTH on the warm side, allowing an 89 degree substrate temp.. I also have two, 25watt (screw in, not tube) UV bulbs in the aquarium hood..

Thanks in advance!
Nicole

The setup isn't completely finished, I have to grab a calcium bowl for food and a more naturalistic water bowl..

I believe your ghost female is a Hipo tangerine carrot tail... and that specific morph is line bred. IMO

Great! She got her first "burn"... Worth $40? Selectively bred or not, still way cooler looking than the super snow male. Maybe we'll pick up another female. Any suggestions?

Your "ghost" is a super hypo. IT is line bred, and I'm not super familiar with the mack snows, but I hear it is actually a dominant trait. I'm actually at quite a loss as to what that pairing should produce.....like I said, I don't work with snows at all. A super hypo snow? White with reduced spotting? Thats a somewhat educated guess.
And a 10 gal is too small IMO for a pair to be kept continuously. Also, they are too small to breed healthily. You really should get another 10 gal setup and keep them seperate until spring. At that point, you can combine them in something bigger if breeding, or just keep them in the 2 tens.

Yeah looking at your pics again, if that is truly a pair, they are too small to be kept together. The SH is worth about 40, maybe 60-75 for a mature or exceptional female. Also, you really should have at least one warm, humid, and cool hide per leo.

No sweat on setting up a larger enclosure.. What size do you suggest? I didn't intend on breeding them immediately.. I told her to pick out any 2 leopard geckos and these are the ones she chose.. As for seperating them, I did a little research and a couple sites said it's up to the owner's preference on keeping males/females together year round. I don't mind seperating them if I have to. I also read a few posts on here mentioning enclosure dimensions... 10x20 for 1.2 adults? I figured I was ok with 2 sub adults in that size.. Which also makes it a lil rough offering 4 hides in such a small cage.. I bought the geckos, accessed this forum from my phone, went to petstmart and bought the tank, lights, calcium powder, moss for the hide and the hide.. I didn't even know leos did well on slate tile but once I found out it was a good medium, I stopped at home depot and grabbed what I needed.. I am ALL for providing the correct habitat for my animals but skimming through forum posts and website caresheets doesn't always provide the perfect information.. Which is why I posted pics of the setup, so I could recieve some constructive critisism...

Thanks again.

For a full grown breeding pair you need a 20 gal or pref. a 20Long, which is also fine for 1.2. Floor space of 12x30 I believe. The reason I am telling you to seperate them now is because females will sometimes be willing to breed before they should. She needs to be at least about 50 grams for that, pref. 60, and at least a year old. I don't know the weighths of your 2, but just from the pics, I am estimating between 6-9 months. This is kind of the danger zone for too early breeding. A female that is gravid without being physically able to carry and lay eggs healthily may have serious side effects, not the least of which is egg binding (potentially fatal) A 10 gal is fine for one adult leo, not two, though you can do it for short copulation periods. And yes, housing a pair together year round is fine once they are both up to breeding size/weight/age.

Thanks again! Would a 40 gallon be overkill for a breeding group?? I have a spare in the garage.. Of course, I will seperate them now into their own 10 gallon enclosures but I'm just thinking ahead for when they reach sexual maturity..

geckogrl6 Oct 14, 2007 06:35 PM

It's pretty hard to have so much room that it causes some sort of negative effect. you could certainly put 1.3 in there, a good size breeding group. The only problem with too much room is that some leos can be lazy, and too much room for crickets to spread out means less being eaten by leos. If you are going to bowl feed, use tongs, or feed seperately out of the enclosure, 2 in a 40 gal is perfectly cool. Are you 100% sure on the sexes? If you in fact have 2 females, you can house them together now (barring quarantine of course)

Well, I got started on the 46 gallon bowfront today.. I'm using plaster and large merimac stone to build the walls of caves.. I started out with two seperate caves on the side that will be heated... I got to thinking.. I'm going to build caves to cover the entire floor of the tank.. Caves near the front will be viewable through the glass.. I will only be building the cave walls.. I'll use peices of slate rock to cap them off and create a "ground level" where food and water will be offered and possibly some open/above ground hides will be provided as well.. Wish me luck!

geckogrl6 Oct 16, 2007 08:13 AM

Very cool! Good luck, and you may want to use some silicone to keep the slate from slipping
