Organic Tort food delivery comparison

NajaAnja Oct 14, 2007 03:17 PM

I have now compared both www.reptileeats.com and www.reptigreens.com. Both places offer organic greens/weeds/flowers and veggies delivered to your door for the herbivore in your life.

I first ordered a half pound grassland mix from www.reptileeats.com a while back. I was pleased over all with the salad mix itself. My piece of opuntia cactus pad had a bit of mold on one edge, nothing too drastic. Just cut it off and use the rest. Shipping was 2 days and it was shipped in a Styrofoam lined box with a packet of ice. The ice had completely melted and the inside of the box was warm. There was condensation on the inside of the bags from them starting to sweat. It also didnt help that the carrier delivered it to my landlord down at the end of my drive way, past my house and I didnt find it for about 5 hours.

Yesterday I went to Chicago to the NARBC show and got to meet and talk with the folks at www.reptigreens.com. I must say I was very impressed, both with the quality of the salad mix and with the way she ships them out. She uses NASA developed materials which are inflatable and reusable. This plastic material envelopes the bag of salad mix completely, insulating it and protecting it. They say that as long as you follow the directions for storage located on each bag that the salad will last up to 2 weeks in the fridge for you. The premium salad mix contains 14 different items in it, at least 4 weeds, 4 greens and 4 flowers in each mix. The regular salad mix contains 10 items. The mix of items changes weekly, so your animals get a varied diet.

Both sites had equally great salad mixes. I am leaning towards the premium salad mix at reptigreens.com at the moment. Its going to be a tough decision who will be getting my standing winter orders this winter. If you have anything to add if you have tried either of these places please feel free to chime in here. I, unfortunately, did not take pics of the mix from reptileeats.com, but was asked to see pics from yesterday's reptigreens.com purchase at the show so I thought I would share those.

I just placed an order for the grassland mixtures--and also added some extra dandelions and orchard gras--I'll post my feedback once I recv the shipment.

NajaAnja Oct 15, 2007 10:29 AM

Thanks, that would be great. Im afraid the shipping from Cali from reptigreens.com might be more than its worth for me out here in the midwest. We will see when I hear back from an inquiry I made yesterday on it. It was much more than she quoted me at the show.

The shipping on my order to AZ was 12.99. I ordered 2 pounds of the grassland mixture, a couple of the dandelions--and 2 other things but I can't remember now!! ha ha.

Mine are pretty good about eating hay but I am starting a section in my yard for strictly tortoise grass/weeds/plants etc. My poor little hibiscus plants can never produce the amounts they would want to eat, so I'm starting that section of my yard tonight. I ordered a bunch of grazing seed mixes and weed/wild flowers mixes. Anxious to see what happens.

But they get regular daily grazing on my other yard as well.

Well shipping for 1lb of the Premium blend at www.reptigreens.com from California to Wisconsin is $17!! (which is more than the lb of food costs)I just dont know. Im going to need on average 2lbs per week throughout the winter. The shipping alone will eat me alive.

I Placed the order last Sunday, the 14th..I'm going to call.

NajaAnja Oct 22, 2007 06:25 PM

That was the weekend of the show, that was also the same night I came home and started a test order to check on shipping rates and there were some outrageous numbers that came up. I found out from her that there was some issues with the shipping calculator so your order may not have processed properly. Has it shown on your statement?

So I placed the order on Sunday the 14th, the company e-mailed me today after I e-mailed them yesterday and said my order will be shipped Monday Oct 29th. That is over 2 weeks that it's taken them to get my order out.

I gave her my feedback and just told them that I would not do business again will have to start going through ReptiGreens.

Still waiting....

dawgcr Nov 03, 2007 02:18 PM

I finally recvd my order yesterday Nov 2nd--placed the order on Sunday Oct 14th.
I ordered 2 pounds of grasslands mixture greens and it looked as if it was going back and smelled that way so I fed it all today. It was very slimy so I knew it wouldn't last much longer. Bummer because I would have liked to keep it for at least a week.
The clovers and orchard grass seem to be ok so that might last me a few more days.
Of course they are all loving this new mixture and probably think it's a special treat but it's unfortunate it took that long to recv and with the mixture going bad I wouldn't recommend this company.

adeniumo24 Nov 03, 2007 03:31 PM

I ordered a small amount from reptile eats and had the same problem as the previous person. My order took 2 weeks even though I ordered before the deadline and when I did recieve it I was very disapointed. The greens were too wet and smelled bad. They didn't have much of a variety ( only dandelion, turnip greens and some romanie lettuce). The only things I managed to save from the mix were the dandelion greens. I wouldn't recomend them.

I like that reptigreens sells edible flowers. I'll have to try them out if the shipping isn't too much because their products seem pricey.

dawgcr Nov 03, 2007 05:40 PM

I agree--I may try Repti Greens as well, and forgive my spelling in the previous messages (you'd think I read it before I post LOL).

I was excited with Reptile Eats because they offered more of the grassland mixtures rather than the salad mixtures...but it was very slimy and didn't smell that good so I fed it all today--they are stuffed I'm sure of it!!

Did you contact them regarding the issue?

Well I originally contacted them regarding the shipping and they said "We can't get all of our orders out on time" and I had mentioned that I wouldn't be using them anymore and they replied with "Best of luck with Repti Greens".
So given that statement I didn't even bother with calling them regarding the orders when I recvd them, just figured it best not to do buisness with them.

NajaAnja Nov 08, 2007 01:14 PM

Wow....that really stinks. Thats not great customer service. I had an issue with the first order and emailed them about it and they apologized and assured me that if I ordered again I would be taken care of. (I mentioned that I was trying them out to see if I liked the product and service)

reptileeats Dec 20, 2007 01:01 PM

As the owner of Reptile Eats I wanted to post the exact emails about this matter.

Email I received:
To: sales@reptileeats.com
Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2007 11:19 AM
Subject: RE: Order placed Sunday the 14th?

So I placed this order on the 14th of Sunday and it’s being shipped almost 2 weeks later? Wow…

Please note that I will not place orders with you again and will be going through reptigreens.com since they ship all orders every Monday.

Not happy and will not suggest this place for business.

Our Reply:
We cannot always handle the volume of orders received every week so we sometimes have to delay orders to the following week.

I wish you well with reptigreens.com.

Thanks,
Daniel & Rebecca

I don't consider our company to have "bad" customer service. We work with customers when there is a problem with the order. This person just gave us no room for improvement.

Save your money. This stuff is just salad mix that you can buy at your local grocery store with a few extras thrown in when it is repackaged.

I laughed when I was approched at a reptile show at what they were selling and the cost.... "reptilegreens"... Red leaf lettuce, some mustard greens, and spring mix, with a few dandelions and hibiscus thrown in...

Gimmicks, gimmicks, gimmicks

Check out turtlestuff.com for some truely nutritious food for your tortoises. Be sure to click on the link that shows the nutrition values of common store bought lettuce and greens.

This is not an add, I do not know nor have I purchased anything from turtlestuff.com. I came across the site as I saw it mentioned on a usergroup that I belong to. This person wanted to know if the grasses, and flowers sold there were healthier for her tortoise than lettuce...Ummmmmm

I didn't write this to offend anyone, I just feel that companies will offer anything to 1) make a buck, 2) go back to #1. This hurts the hobby overall.

Turtlestuff's prices are a bit high, but the knowledge seems to be there. A good example that I saw is that you can order ground Timothy Hay. It is claimed to be freshly ground at the time of shipping. Also most of the foods are sun dried naturally. This means lower protein content. The thing I think I liked the most however is that most of what they sell is seeds that you plant and grow yourself. This gives you the comfort of knowing that you are giving you tortoise an organic meal.

Check it!

Repti Greens offered more Desert Tortoise food varieties like grasses, weeds, dandelions etc..that is why I went with Repti Greens (but not after my exp. with them lol).

I do agree with you on the other website, it was common foods that you can find at your grocery store...the mixtures between the diff lettuces etc.

Turtlestuff.com does have a great variety of stuff, i've purchased several things from them.

I found it much cheaper to go to my local feed store and purchase a bale of grass hay which i use for bedding and feeding--I was also able to go and scoop up a couple of bags of timothy and alfalfa that was lose on the ground that had fallen from the bales of hay--they were like "Yah go ahead, less for us to clean up".
