Breeding different kingsnakes

merlin7676 Oct 14, 2007 06:51 PM

I have a "just curious" question about breeding different kingsnakes. I see lots of posts for different morphs and different species. Can any kingsnakes breed? Like a mexica and a california? Or just closely releated one? Is it because all kingsnakes are the same genus or what?

Yes all kings can breed to another. They can even breed to cornsnakes, milksnakes and bullsnakes.
Bullsnake X California Kings have even been found in the wild.

I know of Gopher x Cal kings being found but never heard of bullsnakes x kings being found. Are you sure you did not have the Bull with the gophers confused?

If there was a bull x king what spp of king?

You're right it was a Gopher.

Do you think this was a natural cross in the wild or someone who experimented and let the hatchlings go in the wild? Any breeders in or close to the area these crosses being found?

It is a highly unlikely cross as wild Cal kings love to eat other snakes.

Just my 2 cents.

That cal king x gopher was found in northern calif on acres of private land that has been untouched. So there was no chance it was a man made hybrid. It was also found by Brian Hubbs who is known for being a bit of a locaity guy. His new book will probably have pics of this snake.

There have been others found as well as natural hybrids in other parts of the country. It's not uncommon. Snakes evolve and they will breed with each other. Cornsnakes X kingsnakes, X other ratsnake species are even more common in the east coast. It is a common theory that most of the north american colubrid came from the black milks in central america.

Also with made made hybridization there is a great number of species from two widespread geographical locations that have recessive genes that ARE allelic with eack other. The chances of this is almost zero unless they originally shared these genes and evolved from each other.

Are you sure you don't mean black kings, instead of black milks?? And I thought it was the desert king that were believed to be the ancestor stock.
