Peachthroat rodent diet and color.

MikesMonitors Oct 14, 2007 06:55 PM

I missed the thread from below and wanted to ad my 2 cents.
This photo is of my 3+ year old male, fed only mice.
I've seen some Jobiensis called "sunburst" and this guy ranks right up there! This is the sire of the clutch I have incubating now.
If he has lost any color while in captivity, he must have been a SUPER SUNBURST!

Like I have said before I have never had this "fading" of color with any of my Jobiensis.

You ever get the itch to get back into Monitors?
Thanks for your imput on this subject of color fading.

Yeah I'm pretty busy, lots of travel for the rest of the year at least. But hey, I've only got 2 kids. How many do you have 6 or 7?

I had a good 10 year run with monitors and I definately plan on more in the future, I just need to be able to give them the time and energy they deserve.

So for now I'll read the forums for the occasional tidbit of good info or pictures, try to stay away from the meaningless bickering (tough not to get sucked in) and hopefully be in a position to work with a few types of monitors in a couple of years.

Good luck with the peachies.

Eight!?! Holy smokes man, tie a knot in that thing!

I have no immediate plans to be out that way soon. I was relatively close last week, I was in Minneapolis for a couple of days.
I'm home this week, next week is DC for 4 days, Austin for 4 days, home in California for 3 days, Hawaii for 4 days, home for a couple weeks, Hawaii for 10 days. Whew, then I'm done for the year (I think).

I look forward to seeing some little peachie hatchlings, and will definately let you know if I'm ever in your area.

Too small for a knot, had to use a zip tie!

You are a busy man a lucky one as well. Those are some nice destinations!

Perhaps one day I'll be able to throw you some captive born Jobiensis.

Nice talking with ya!

From my point of view your monitors have faded colors, they have slate grey tails witch should be blue ( or green in sunburst jobiensis) and they lost the intense olive green dorsal coloration that distinguish jobiensis.

Why do you take this personal? Man they are only friken lizards.
I never said they look ugly, I said they lost some coloration, and this is reversible, but hey if your color blind and like them this way, that’s fine with me.

Island jobiensis Batanta Waigeo have the least colourful tails of all jobiensis morphs, yet mine went from off white to the deepest blue in a matter of months, my sunburst went from a barely noticeable greenish tint to a rich mint green tail, my regulars all exhibited awesome blue tails at any age and the most delightful olive green dorsal, these characteristics are what makes these monitors so appealing, they set them apart from the other monitors, we can work our husbandry to allow these monitors to glow, this is nothing new, birders and aquarist have been doing it for many years, Japanese fish breeders have for 1000 years, hey they must be so darn dumb to think any foods could affect color, yet they changed a plain brown carp into those amazing tri and four colours fishes of today’s pet trade, but you mike must see them all in plain brown?

ps. best of luck with the eggs!

jobi Oct 16, 2007 01:54 PM

This should be obvious to all

It’s a photo of my older first pair of Waigeo jobiensis, I took that photo about one year after I imported them, so they are well established and healthy, notice how the tail of both monitors have faded.

That was the consequence of a deficient diet, not deficient in the nutritional sense, but in the pigmentation sense.

This color fading doesn’t happen anymore with my new diet, this pair of the same specie clearly shows a striking difference.

Sorry I cant access any better photos of other jobiensis at the moment, but still these show the point I am trying to make.

Steeve
Your point of view is just that.
I have a suggestion for you. Feed your feeders Spurlina(sp?) blue/green algae(sp?) this may help your lizards "glow"!
Thanks for the best wishes on my eggs!
And on a side note I'm not color blind!
Get well soon Brother.
